Politics Maina: Prominent Nigerians Named Beneficiaries of Fresh N17bn Pension Scandal

Image
A fresh N17bn pension scandal has been traced to ex-pension reform boss, Abdulrasheed Maina, according to The Nation.  The said cash was diverted by Maina from the N24billion budgeted by FG for payment of pension liabilities through the Presidential Pension Reforms Task Team. The money was stolen in five years from 2008 to 2013 in tranches of N2.7billion and N14.374billion respectively. It's believed that N2.7billion was converted to personal use and N14.374billion was shared by Maina and those in the chain of pension management in different Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs). They used the guise of phantom biometric verification to perpetrate the act. Those implicated in the pension funds bazaar in the Pension Task Force Payment Vouchers include a former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), A former Acting Chairman of ICPC, a former Inspector-General of Police, two former Heads of Service, Permanent Secretary (State House) and top directors in...

Sports Controversy as Anthony Joshua Beats Carlos Takam to Retain World Heavyweight Titles

Image
Anthony Joshua on Saturday defeated a relentless and bloodied Carlos Takam in a furious fight.  The English boxer retained his International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Association world heavyweight titles by finishing the Cameroon’s France-based challenger at the Principality Stadium. Joshua had his nose broken in the second round by Takam's forehead, and he recovered sufficiently enough by the fourth to ensure his French-Cameroonian opponent had to take a standing count after being knocked down by a left hook which opened a nasty cut above Takam’s right eye, and he was twice inspected by the ringside physician before it was all over. Joshua tried to regain momentum in the eighth with two left hands that shook Takam, who was inspected by the ringside doctor at the start of the ninth round. Takam was allowed to fight on but in the tenth he was shook by a right to the head and as Joshua unloaded more punches that landed flush, referee Phil Edwards stopped the fight. Takam c...

Politics Sagay to Nigerians: You Are 'Extremely Unreasonable' if You Criticize Buhari Over Maina Saga

Itse Sagay, President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption adviser, believes that the president's anti-corruption war is “pure”, regardless of growing criticisms over his handling of corruption allegations against top officials. He was reacting to the controversial re-integration of Abdurasheed Maina, futigitive former pension chief, into the civil service. According to him, critics were being “extremely unreasonable” and desperate to find fault. “People who are determined to find wrong will find it no matter how pure the situation is,” he said. “Maina escaped out of this country under Jonathan. When he was sneaked back into the country, did Buhari know about it? The first time he knew he ordered that the man be dismissed and arrested. What more do you want him to say? I think people are extremely unreasonable.” He also faulted the demand that the Interior Minister, Abdulrahman Dambazzau and the Justice Minister, Abubakar Malami, be fired for their role in the recall. “These are ear...

Politics Osinbajo: Religion One of Key Reasons Nigeria Remains Underdeveloped

Image
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has stated that corruption, tribalism and religion are the key problems hampering Nigeria’s development. He spoke at a crowded Lagos conference, tagged: “Towards a Better Nigeria,’’ organised by leading Nigerian pastors. Osinbajo said that to build a new Nigeria, “we need people of integrity, hard work and people with love for the country. “It is this tribe that can configure the argument for change in Nigeria. The corrupt Nigerian elites are one tribe. “In sharing their loot, they neither bring in ethnicity nor religion but only use such to create misunderstandings that will benefit themselves. “The reason Nigeria is where it is today is because people do not really care. It is time people should stand up for what is right and join the fight against corruption. “Corruption has become the rule in Nigeria and this must stop. It did not start with this administration and it is yet to stop. On the Fulani herdsmen palaver, the vice-president said that “contrar...

Metro What I Will Do For Yorubas as Aare Ona Kakanfo - Gani Adams

Image
Gani Adams, the new Aare Ona Kakanfo-designate of Yoruba land, has stated that his urgent objective for the south west is achieving true federalism.  “We are talking about restructuring––what politicians call true federalism––which in a proper arrangement, is called federal system of government, not the system we are running now that is completely a unitary system of government,” he said. He observed that true federalism was the foundation of Nigeria’s independence in 1960 and the basis of the republic constitution in 1963, argued that it is the pragmatic system that affords each geographical zone the luxury to develop at their own pace. "Without restructuring this country there is no way Nigeria can move forward", he said. “We have been over-dependent on allocations coming from the centre and we have not been creative in our government levels, and at the same time, private initiatives have not thrived,” he said. “Being Aare Ona Kakanfo will energise me to foster unity in Yo...

Sports Mourinho: Why I Made 'Shut up' Gesture After Tottenham Game

Image
Manchester United on Saturday defeated Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford by a lone goal in a high-profile game. At the sound of the final whistle, Manchester United Manager, Jose Mourinho, put his forefinger to his lips in a manner which seems to tell his critics, "shut up, I know what I'm doing." Asked what he meant by the signal, Mourinho retorted: “Calm down, relax a little bit. Don’t be so nervous, relax. “I don’t understand some reactions when people question “Are they Red Devils?” Our two strikers were up against amazing central defenders today, some of the best in Europe. “Martial plays the same position as Marcus but is more comfortable dropping in between the lines and driving with the ball as well as attacking space. I told him to do that when he came on and to play from Lukaku. “He was against three very good defenders but they’d had a hard match for 70 minutes. “Maybe it was a lucky shot but his desire was good and the goal gives us two more points than 0-0. I...

Image
Simon Lalung, the governor of Plateau state, has stated that the presidency's political appointments are not sitting well with state governors.  He lamented that governors aren't contacted before political appointments are made by President Muhammadu Buhari. He spoke at the commissioning of the office complex of the Buhari Support Organisation (BSO) in Abuja. “If things are wrong, they are wrong. If they are right, they are right. But it requires very courageous people to come out and say these things are wrong or they are right. “Let Mr. President be aware that this is the time to do it, because even as governors, we are also complaining in our various states. We complain in our states that we sit down and we hear appointments made and then people start asking you as the governor where is this man coming from? But when we turn right and turn left, we don’t know where such a person is coming from. “Many people have complained. I’m sure governors have complained that we should ...
