Nigerian naira depreciated by 1.49% against United States Dollar to close at N312.98 at the Inter-bank foreign exchange market. At the parallel market, the currency down to N452.00 to the dollar as shortages on the official market persist, funneling importers to the unofficial market, amidst declining currency reserves in Africa’s biggest economy. The President, Association of Bureau De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON), Mr. Aminu Gwadabe, argued that the current rate of the naira on the parallel market was not a true reflection of the value of the currency. Sam Allardyce used his position as England manager to negotiate a £400,000 deal and offered advice to businessmen on how to “get around” FA rules on player transfers, The Telegraph can disclose. Before he had even held his first training session as England’s new head coach, Allardyce negotiated a deal with men purporting to represent a Far East firm that was hoping to profit from the Premier League’s billion-pound transfer market. He agreed to travel to Singapore and Hong Kong as an ambassador and explained to the “businessmen” how they could circumvent Football Association rules which prohibit third parties “owning” players. Buhari's Biography Written by American Professor to be Presented on Oct 3

John Paden, an American Professor of International Studies has written a biography of President Muhammadu Buhari which will be presented on the 3rd of October 2016. The book is titled: “Muhammadu Buhari: The Challenge of Leadership in Nigeria.” Mr. Paden, who possesses a deep knowledge about Nigeria and her leaders, is also the author of "Ahmadu Bello: Sardauna of Sokoto," a biography of the late Premier of the North with emphasis on “Values and Leadership in Nigeria.” He wrote the book in 1986. Mr. Buhari’s biography is expected to be presented at the International Conference Centre Abuja, with the president himself expected to be in attendance. Although President Buhari has signified his intention to attend the Book launch, he has however, given directive that the event should not be an official event.

Nigeria's Ex Naval Chief Arraigned for Corruption

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Tuesday arraigned a former Nigeria's former Chief of Naval Staff, Usman Jibrin, has been arraigned before a court in Abuja on corruption charges by the EFCC. The retired vice admiral, was arraigned alongside two others: Bala Mshelia and Shehu Ahmadu, both retired rear admirals, on a 4-count charge of criminal conspiracy. They were docked alongside Habour Bay International Limited. They were accused of buying a house worth N600 million from the account of Naval Engineering Services. The purchase was not captured in the budget. Instead, the documentation of transfer of ownership of the property was done such that a private company owned by Mr. Jibrin’s family became the buyer. The defendants pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to them. The case was adjourned till Wednesday for bail hearing.

Prices of Beans, Local Rice, Others Crash by 50% in Bauchi

Prices of food items in Bauchi State have continued crash after months of soaring food prices. Checks in some of the major markets in the state by DailyTrust revealed that prices of food items have reduced by about 50 percent. A bag of maize which few months ago was going for N18,000 now sells for N9,000 while local rice that used to cost N35,000 is now being sold at N20,000, a grain seller at Muda Lawal Market, Bauchi, Malam Adamu Kafin Maigari said. He also said that a bag of Beans is now sold at N16,000 from its previous price of N25,000, while a bag of millet and white rice popularly called Shinkafar Tuwo, now cost N9,000 and N20,000 respectively from their previous prices of N15,000 and N37,000. He attributed the crash in prices to the bumper harvest recorded in the country following the massive engagement in farming by many people. Sam Allardyce, has quit his position as England football manager by mutual agreement with the Football Association after one match and 67 days in charge. His resignation follows a newspaper investigation claiming he offered advice on how to “get around” rules on player transfers. Allardyce, 61, is also alleged to have used his role to negotiate a deal worth £400,000 to represent a Far East firm. According to a statement from the FA, Allardyce’s conduct “was inappropriate” and Gareth Southgate will take temporary charge. “He accepts he made a significant error of judgement and has apologised,” the FA said. “This is not a decision that was taken lightly but the FA’s priority is to protect the wider interests of the game and maintain the highest standards of conduct in football. “The manager of the England men’s senior team is a position which must demonstrate strong leadership and show respect for the integrity of the game at all times.”   ...

An angry mob has burnt an okada rider to death over his involvement in a robbery at Finger bus-stop, Badagry Expressway, Lagos. According to a witness, the bike man was shot while trying to escape with his accomplice after a robbery. "He was running along the road and jumped on the bike waiting for him. Unfortunately for them, Police around gave them a chase, fatally shooting the bike man in the process. An angry mob descended on the robbers, burning the bike man while the Police left with the armed accomplice."  

Senate Orders Arrest, Slaughter of Roaming Cows in FCT, Abuja

The Nigerian senate has ordered that roaming cows in Abuja be slaughtered. This is as instructed by the Chairman of Senate Committee on FCT, Senator Dino Melaye at an interactive meeting with the FCT Minister, Mohammed Bello and Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Brutai in Abuja. An alternative is that the roaming cows should be arrested and a fine of N50, 000 imposed per cow, he said. “We are not particularly happy with the state of sanitation in the FCT. We have received a lot of complaints across the metropolis of FCT but the greatest of it all is the menace of cattle rearers in the territory.” He recalled how on his way to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, he saw an underage herdsman with over 50 cows passing through the pedestrian route which blocked the only route for created for pedestrians. Nigeria's Foreign Reserve Drops by Almost $2bn

Nigeria's Minister of Budget and National Planning, Sen. Udoma Udo Udoma, on Tuesday announced that the country's foreign reserves have reduced from $26.51 billion in the second quarter of 2016 to $24.74 billion in September. The Minister said Nigeria had revenue and foreign currency concentration problems, adding that diversification was the only solution. He spoke during the 57th annual conference of Nigerian Economic Society with the theme “the developmental state and diversification of the Nigerian economy”.

President Buhari Inherited N1.5tn Debt on Road Contracts - Fashola

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, has said that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari inherited road contractual liabilities worth N1.5tn. Fashola said this in a statement made available to our correspondent in Abuja on Sunday by his Special Adviser, Communications, Mr. Hakeem Bello. The minister said the ministry inherited 206 roads that were not budgeted for or poorly funded, but added that it had now developed a road map consisting of identifying and prioritising heavy traffic bearing roads for conveying essential goods and services across the country. President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday met behind closed-doors with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara and Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The duo that came together in one vehicle to the forecourt of the Presidential Villa spent over 45 minutes in the President’s office. Boko Haram Recaptures Borno Villages, Hoists Flag To Announce Return

Nigeria's militant Islamist group Boko Haram has hoisted its flag in three villages in the north-east after over-running them yesterday, a security source told BBC. The militants slaughtered at least eight people, including a village elder, during the attack, the security source and residents said. The villages - Kubirivour, Boftari and Kuburmbalah - are near Chibok town, from where the militants captured more than 200 schoolgirls in 2014. Others sources said the militants were still in control of Malam Fatori town, on the Nigeria-Niger border. Last Sunday, Nigerian troops recaptured the town from the jihadists. However, the militants reinforced their ranks and regained control of the town.  

Edo Election: US Consul General Speaks Ahead of Polls

The United States Government on Tuesday expressed the need for Wednesday’s Edo governorship election to be credible. John Bray, US Consul General, made the remark during a courtesy visit to Gov. Adams Oshiomhole. He said it was essential that the election was credible, peaceful, transparent, violent- free as well as reflect the will of the people. Bray said he was in the state to observe the election alongside other election observers, adding, however, that the postponement of the poll few weeks ago was a setback. Responding, Oshiomhole appreciated the US Government’s continuous interest in the growth and development of democracy in the country. He stressed that all stakeholders must join hands together to achieve a free and non-violent election. - NAN

MMM Zimbabwe Crashes, Thousands Lose Billions

MMM Zimbabwe, the Zimbabwean section of ponzi scheme making the rounds in Nigeria has crashed. According to Pulse, MMM in Zimbabwe a few weeks ago stopped withdrawals, causing its collapse. Thousands of people, among them civil servants, vendors and more, reportedly lost thousands of dollars (which translates to billions, trillions of the local currency) to the fraudulent online pyramid scheme. This is despite the warning the country's government against investing in the scheme. The same situation obtains in Nigeria. Some are adamant that the scheme is legit despite warning from government to desist from it. MMM South Africa had also in May 2016, with the company saying that it was a media panic and said it was 'starting over'. In January 2016, the Chinese government banned MMM because it is a Ponzi scheme

Edo Election: NSCDC Deploys 15,250 Personnel To Monitor Polls

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps said that it deployed 15, 250 personnel to Edo for the governorship election in the state on Wednesday. The acting Deputy Commandant-General (Operations) of the corps, Mr Hillary Madu, made this known at a news conference on Tuesday in Benin. He said that the personnel had arrived in the state, adding that they comprised 15, 000 armed and unarmed officers and additional 250 “special squad drawn from the specialised units of the corps. Madu said the specialised units included Special Weapon and Tactics, Kernel, Counter Terrorism and Undercover. He said the officers would work in synergy with other security agencies to ensure a free, fair and credible election. Madu said that five commandants of the corps from commands in neighbouring states had been deployed to coordinate the operations of the personnel during the polls.

A wedding ceremony in Yemen has turned into a murder scene following the killing of 12 men by the father of the bride. Officials and a relative of the family said the father of the bride, a "mentally disturbed retired army officer" hurled two grenades, killing eight women, four children and himself. Eighteen others, including women and children, were wounded in the incident late Monday in the town of Yarim, in western Ibb province, the official said. A relative said the father, Hazaa Sharman, was a “mentally disturbed retired army officer.” Ravaged by an 18-month long fighting between government forces and rebels, Yemen is awash with personal weapons and carrying firearms is entrenched in the traditions of the republic.
