Metro EFCC Chairman Magu: We Have Recovered $2.9bn In The Last 2 Years

The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, on Wednesday said the commission recovered loots totaling N738.9 billion ($2.9 bn) between May, 2015 and October 20, 2017. This amount excludes loots recovered in other currencies like Durham, CRA and British Pound, he said. He stated this at the ongoing 7th Session of the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption holding in Vienna, Austria. “Within this year alone, the commission recovered stolen assets running into several millions of US Dollars and billions in naira. “These include the sum of $43 million recovered from Diezani Alison-Madueke, Nigeria’s former Minister of Petroleum and N2 billion spread in seven accounts within three Nigerian banks laundered from the Federal Capital Territory Police Command Salary Accounts”, he explained. Business FG Signs Financial Agreement for Construction of Lagos-Abidjan Expressway

The federal government of Nigeria has signed a financial agreement for the execution of Lagos-Abidjan highway, Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has revealed. According to Olusegun Ogunkayode, a Senior Information Officer in the ministry, Fashola made this disclosure at the ninth Steering Committee and Experts Meeting of the Lagos-Abidjan Corridor Highway Development Programme. He said the signing of the financial agreement was a demonstration of the federal government’s commitment to the realisation of the project. Mr. Fashola said that the Lagos-Abidjan corridor would propel rapid integration of the region, boost commercial activities, improve social development, create employment windows and reduce social vices among the member states. Politics Govt Issues Sly Statement on $1.4m Contract Scandal Rocking Defense Ministry

Nigeria's Defense Minister, Munir Dan-Ali, and three senior officials of the ministry were recently named in a $1.4m contract scandal. Reacting, the Defence Ministry’s spokesman, Col. Tukur Gusau said, “The fact of the matter is that the procedure of awarding contracts by the ministry is in line with the existing procurement act of the Federal Government of Nigeria. “The said contract has already been successfully executed and the contractor has requested a team from the Ministry of Defence and the Defence Headquarters to carry out a completion inspection of the project. “The team is due in Mali soon. There is no fraud in the process. Politics Fashola Summoned by Nigeria Senate Over Questionable Power Projects

Senator Dino Melaye on Wednesday moved a motion on the floor of the Red Chamber titled "Monumental Fraud in the Power Sector", accusing Power Minister Babatunde Fashola of trying to secure $350m domiciled in the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority to finance electricity projects without following due process. According to him, $35m has already been released for the power project and nothing tangible has been done. “Why is the ministry engaging in constructing new power plant while the government has several idle plants that is seeking buyers for? President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Minister of Heath, Prof. Isaac Adewole to investigate reports of an ‘unknown disease’ that has led to the death of several children in Jigawa State. The President also directed the Minister to deploy all the necessary machinery to combat the outbreak of the disease reported in Gidan Dugus village of Wangara district, Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State. President Buhari, in a telephone call to Governor Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa State on Tuesday evening to find out the details of the incident, commiserated with the governor and the families of the victims. He assured the governor that the Federal Government will provide the necessary support to contain the spread of the disease.

The police boss stated this while appearing before a Senate ad-hoc committee investigating various allegations levelled against him by a senator, Isah Misau. He said his appearance before the committee was borne out of his respect for the Senate and not to answer questions from the lawmakers. “I’m represented by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria here, that’s Alex Izyon,” Mr. Idris said. “I will not make any other comment or answer any question in respect to the allegation (by Mr. Misau) and various civil and criminal cases pending in the law court. The government of Jersey Island on Tuesday insisted that about $300 million Abacha loot would not be released to Nigeria if a third party representation is brought into the picture. The Attorney General of Jersey Island, Robert J. MacRae QC, stated this on Tuesday during the ongoing 7th Session of Conference of State Parties to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption in Vienna, Austria. A statement on Tuesday by the Head of Media and Publicity of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Wilson Uwujaren, made this known. MacRae spoke at a side meeting with the Nigeria delegation led by acting EFCC Chairman, Ibrahim Magu. The statement said: “The Jersey Attorney General expressly stated that negotiations in respect of repatriation of the USD300 million being part of the Abacha involving Jersy, Nigeria and the United States, ‘must be government to government cooperation’. “The EFCC was accompanied to the meeting by four members of the Nigeria delegation.”

Tahir said: “ It is not a wise decision for Atiku to abandon the house he helped to build, so we want him back.’’ He said that the problem that led to mass defection of former members of the party to other parties were over, hence the need for them to return.
