Politics CJN Confirms Justice Salami Turned Down Appointment

The Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman of the National Judicial Council, Walter Onnoghen, has confirmed that retired Justice Ayo Salami turned down offer as Chairperson of the Corruption and Financial Crimes Cases Trial Monitoring Committee.

Mr. Onnoghen’s spokesperson, Awassam Bassey, while confirming the development to Premium Times said “His Lordship the Hon Chief Justice of Nigeria awaits Hon Salami’s letter of resignation. That’s all I can say at this moment. A more detailed response will be communicated to you when we receive Hon. Mr. Justice Salami’s letter.

Mr. Salami was appointed chairperson of the committee by the NJC in September, years after he left office as president of the Appeal Court under controversial circumstances.

Edo Election: NSCDC Deploys 15,250 Personnel To Monitor Polls

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps said that it deployed 15, 250 personnel to Edo for the governorship election in the state on Wednesday. The acting Deputy Commandant-General (Operations) of the corps, Mr Hillary Madu, made this known at a news conference on Tuesday in Benin. He said that the personnel had arrived in the state, adding that they comprised 15, 000 armed and unarmed officers and additional 250 “special squad drawn from the specialised units of the corps. Madu said the specialised units included Special Weapon and Tactics, Kernel, Counter Terrorism and Undercover. He said the officers would work in synergy with other security agencies to ensure a free, fair and credible election. Madu said that five commandants of the corps from commands in neighbouring states had been deployed to coordinate the operations of the personnel during the polls.

Abia state Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, has said that South-East Governors only banned the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), but did not declare it a terrorist organization. He stated this while speaking on The Osasu Show, where he also explained that the Governors only proscribed the activities of the group, to douse tension in the region. DISTURBING: Ex Army Officer Kills 12 at Daughter's Wedding Ceremony

A wedding ceremony in Yemen has turned into a murder scene following the killing of 12 men by the father of the bride. Officials and a relative of the family said the father of the bride, a "mentally disturbed retired army officer" hurled two grenades, killing eight women, four children and himself. Eighteen others, including women and children, were wounded in the incident late Monday in the town of Yarim, in western Ibb province, the official said.
